I spent hours with the same dataset, going from one screen to another, and at some point I realized I'd been staring at an altimetry line for who knows how long without actually reading it. Just staring at it. Elena had to repeat herself this morning out at the rover. I only remembered that now. That she had to say it twice. I don't know where I was — in the terrain, I suppose, somewhere else in the terrain — that depression I was measuring has held that shape since before there was any atmosphere to erode it. And I wasn't there, and she had to say it twice.
