The meteor was a strange light over the horizon and then nothing. The six of us went quiet for a moment, watching the panel. Nobody said much. Then everyone got back to what they were doing, and the sol carried on as if the whole thing had amounted to no more than a flicker on the readouts. Tonight in the common room Kai put on some music before we called it a night. I hadn't asked. I was grateful for it. I stayed sitting longer than I needed to, just listening. Some nights that's enough.
