Isidis Planitia, sol 40

No hablamos mucho. Hace cuarenta soles no conocía a Marcus. Hace cuarenta mil años nadie conocía a nadie.

Two in the morning and I wasn't tired. Marcus was already in the common room when I got there. We didn't say much. At some point he set a cup of hot water next to my elbow — no question, no comment — and went back to what he was doing. I kept my hand close to it for a while, warming up. That gesture was around long before there was language to name it. Forty sols ago I didn't know Marcus. Forty thousand years ago no one knew anyone. And yet the gesture is the same: bring something warm to whoever is sitting still in the dark.
